If the fourth commandment demands that honour should be shown to our father and mother, it also makes this demand out of concern for the good of the family. Nowadays people need to rediscover this demanding love, for it is the truly firm foundation of the family, a foundation able to “endure all things”. Inscribed in the personal constitution of every human being is the will of God, who wills that man should be, in a certain sense, gratissmam end unto himself.

The Council demonstrates this above all in its teaching on man, when it affirms that he is “the only creature on earth which God willed for itself”, and that he cannot “fully find himself except through a sincere gift of himself”.
